Relay For Life

Sarina Relay for Life – Sarina High Team
17 hours and 651 laps later, the annual Relay for Life event for 2018 had finished for another year...
The Sarina State High School team of 40 members came together to raise money to support the Cancer Council. We were the largest registered team at this years event – what an amazing achievement!! As a team, we raised $1557.70!
It was great to see other community groups participate in the Relay for one goal; to raise money for cancer research and to honour those who have survived and lost their battle to cancer.
We acknowledged the cancer survivors and the carers, as well as those families who have lost a loved one. Relay for Life involves walking around an oval for 17 hours to symbolise how cancer never sleeps and the journey through darkness. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, it can affect anyone from your mum, dad, sister, brother, uncle, aunty, or best friend.
It was so awesome to see our fellow peers involved in something bigger than ourselves. There was plenty of entertainment to keep us awake and walking. We had local singers and bands perform, dance performances, 1am karaoke, Zumba and bubble soccer throughout the night. Mr Matthews and one of our own students Mia Johnson, entered a fun Mr & Mrs Relay dress up competition and had the whole team in fits of laughter.
We shared in the emotional candle lightening ceremony, which was an important formality of the event. Each team member had the opportunity to write messages of hope to lay in-front of our team tent. Some students wrote messages to family members who are currently undergoing treatment, others wrote of how much they miss loved ones. Our team laughed, cried and encouraged one another to keep going.
Together we joined in something globally recognised.
As such, a huge thank you goes out to all those adults and teachers who made the Sarina State High School Team possible, and for all the behind the scenes work you all did. Thank-you Mr Van Nunen, Miss Sue, Mrs Nicol, Chappy Ben, Mrs Tunstall and Mr Matthews. Also to Ken Parchert from the Sarina Rotary Club, and Mr Tunstall for collecting everything we forgot to pack.
Thank-you also to the parents, who supported us financially to attend the event.
